About the Association
1. Our History
The Royal Australian Engineers Association of South Australia was formally established on
26 May 1947 at Torrens Hall Kilkenny South Australia, with 28 signatures on the attendance register. Official records show regular meetings and attendance through to the 25 April 1983, where the first constitution was penned, a date chosen with deep reverence for the legacy of ANZAC Day — a day that symbolizes courage, sacrifice, and the enduring bonds of service. The Association was reconstituted on 21 April 2013, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the proud traditions of the Sapper community in South Australia and adapting to the evolving needs of its members.
Rooted in the distinguished history of the Royal Australian Engineers — whose origins trace back to 1902 and earlier colonial engineering units — the Association serves as a living bridge between generations of Sappers. It was founded by veterans and serving members who recognized the importance of maintaining the camaraderie forged in service, honoring those who came before, and supporting those who continue to serve.
South Australian Sappers have contributed to:
The construction of critical infrastructure for defence and civil society
Emergency response and disaster relief across the state and nation
International deployments in peacekeeping, reconstruction, and humanitarian operations
The preservation of Corps traditions, values, and esprit de corps
Through reunions, commemorations, community engagement, and advocacy, the Association ensures that the legacy of the Royal Australian Engineers in South Australia is not only remembered — but lived.
